Assessment, Recording & Reporting

All students’ work is assessed regularly, and records kept by the teachers. The prime purpose of all assessment is to improve learning; this is achieved by telling students how well they have met the criteria of any piece of work, and advising them on how to improve.

Target-setting

The school uses national information and teacher judgements on attainment to set a ‘predicted’ and ‘potential’ grade regularly for each student. Students are also given a ‘value added’ grade which is the grade that could be expected in public examinations, given the student’s previous level of achievement. We aim for every student to achieve more. Parents are informed of these grades, which are used as a focus for discussion between parents, students and teachers about what steps are necessary to achieve improvement. The school also use Cognitive Attainment Tests (CATs) with Year 9 students in order to identify student needs and ensure ability setting is correct.

Reports

Each term, parents receive a summative report indicating for each subject whether a student is achieving at, above or below expectations, as well as an assessment of study skills. Reports also contain comments from tutors, attendance data and information on rewards and sanctions. Reports are followed by regular Teacher Consultation Evenings where parents and students can meet with teachers following the report, discuss the issues raised and agree targets for improvement.

Academic Tutoring

All Year 11 students will undertake intensive academic tutoring with the House Tutor. This will involve regular discussions as to how students are progressing, evaluating attainment data, discussing study skills and setting short term targets for improvement in the run-up to GCSE exams. These targets are shared with relevant teachers and sent home to parents.
